ROSS FOLK CHOIR: a non-auditioning community folk choir based in Ross-on-Wye
Do you like folk music?
Do you like singing / would you like to sing in a group?
Do you like wonderfully scrunchy harmonies?
Would you like to be part of a social gang?
There are no auditions and you don’t need to be able to read music (but it is always provided); learning is through a combination of learning by ear, reading sheet music and using audio guide tracks.
We are a performing choir and we have 2 major concerts a year, one in the summer and one at Christmas as well as an annual slot at Bromyard Folk Festival in September. There are often additional joint concerts with other groups as well as community events that we sing at, so a certain level of commitment is required along with some learning homework.
We have both extremes of ability and experience in the choir; some with limited singing experience who don’t read music and others who are very confident and can sight sing with ease; many are somewhere in between. If you are lacking in confidence in your singing ability, we will do all we can to boost you and help you to learn the songs; talk to some of our members who have been through this process!
If you are a total beginner but are keen to do the necessary work we will welcome you with open arms. If you are an experienced singer and a good reader, we will also welcome you with open arms; this is folk music – it’s music for everyone!
Our rehearsals are usually a capella (just voices, no accompaniment) but we perform with a brass quartet and a string quartet so they also attend in the run-up to a performance.
We rehearse on a Tuesday night in Ross-on-Wye (usually in St. Mary’s Church Hall) and many of us go to the pub afterwards.
There is a fee: £40 for a 6 week block or £8 for individual sessions
